Robots.txt File – What, Where, How, When & Ah!.
A couple of users asked me some of the simple types of questions relating to Robots.txt file. So, today I’m gonna answer their questions. And, I’m sure that an Internet beginner can also understand very well that:
- What is Robots.txt File?
- Where can I find My File?
- How to Create it?
- When should we use it?
So, these are the questions I choose to answer.
What is Robots.txt File?
A Robots.txt File is a file which communicates to Search Engine Crawlers about the actions to take. That what to do with a particular directory, post, page, and… on your Blog-site. It also gives us control that which Search Engine can send Crawlers to Crawl my Blog-Site. Finally, I can say that it’s the Bot-Controller, which is important and great for SEO of-course.
Where can I find My Bot-Controller (Robots.txt File)?
You can find it by typing your Domain name and followed by /robots.txt or at the root directory of your domain (of course, if you’ve). As I can find mine here:
And if you’re using a CMS you can use a plugin to find and also to create one.
How to Create it?
It’s simple to create a Robots.txt File. You just need a text editor and your vision, how you want Crawlers to Crawl and Index your Blog-Site.
You can create it by using a Text Editor like Notepad, make sure that it’s extension is (.txt). Create an SEO Optimized robots file and upload it to the root of your domain.
And, if you’re a WordPress user then you can have a Plugin to create a Robots.txt File for you. I recommend using WordPress SEO by Yoast Plugin.
Comments: If you want to add any comment for yourself as a note, you can do that followed by (#). Everything after # will be ignored by Search Engine Crawlers.
When should we use it?
You can use Robots.txt File when you have some sensitive data images, videos, pages like disclaimer and policies or anything that you don’t want Crawlers to Index in SERPs.
Maybe your site is not prepared yet or under construction.
Webmasters Errors (Ah!):-
- Error 404 (Not Found)
Suppose you don’t have a Robots.txt File, then NO PROBLEM. Crawlers will still crawl your Blog-Site. but the difference is, now they have Freedom to Crawl and Index anything of your Blog-Site.
- Crawling is Postponed
Errors like 500 (Internal Server Error), 403 (Forbidden), Timeout or Unreachable. All these errors tend to postponed in crawling. Maybe your Blog-Site loading time is high, error on your hosting server or you’ve disallowed that particular Crawler.
Still, you’ve any query, feel free to ask.
- Create an Optimized Robots.txt File.
