You Landed to Learn WordPress. Okay, today we’ll talk about “What to do just after Installing WordPress or what Default Settings we should change after the Completion of WP Installation“.
Prevention is Always Better than Cure.
A light Reason to change these settings just after installation is; You’re installing WordPress on one of your domain, logged out and sat back to work later. It might be possible that Google or other Search Engine has Indexed your sample data. And, then you’ll go to their Webmaster Tools to remove that all out of their Database. So, it’s better to take action before they take and index your sample ones.
Things to do just After Installing WordPress
Now, I’m going to show you what settings matter the most and you need to change and what plugins you need to install to after installing WordPress to Setup your WP Blog for working well.
1. Delete Sample Post and Page :
When you install WordPress, it comes with Sample Post, Page and Comment to check or Previewing your WordPress Blog with some Data. So, we should delete this all sample data before it gets Indexed in Search Engines.
As you can see a menu on the left side of your WordPress Dashboard with a lot of options available. To delete this sample data, go to-
Post: Posts > All Posts and Move to Trash it.
Pages: Pages > All Pages and Move to Trash it.
2. Change Tagline and Fav-icon :
Title and Tagline plays a major role in the SEO or Indexing of a Website or Blog. And, Default Tagline by WordPress Developer for a New WordPress Installation is Just another WordPress site however they give an option to Change our Title while performing the WordPress Installation.
Usually, default Tagline Doesn’t suit our Business. So, we need to change it right away. Another point is that we can change our Title and Tagline anytime in the General Settings (Settings > General) from your WordPress Dashboard.
Fav-icon can be changed by going to Appearance > Customize.
3. Membership Management :
You can set the Membership option according to your need. You can enable Membership in case you’re going to create a Multiple author Blog or a Website which is going to offer paid services, typically this kind of website needs to be a registered user.If not, then we recommend you to disable the Membership Facility by going to Settings > General.
4. Change Timezone :
Change Timezone according to your local time by going to Settings > General, which will help you a lot in many ways, as shown above.
5. Change Permalink Structure :
Permalink means the structure of URL of post and pages. Permalink helps a lot in SEO, it should be Search Engine friendly so Google or other Search Engines can Rank you well in their Search results. By default, Permalink is set to http://www.yourdomain.com/?p=123, which is not good for our SEO or Search Engine Ranking.
To make it Search Engine Friendly, set your Permalink to Post name by going to Settings > Permalinks. Believe me, It’ll definitely Rank you very well in Search Engines.
6. Change Comments Setting :
It’s up to you, what you want with your Blog Posts comments. But we recommend you to Enable Manual Approval of Comments to prevent posting of abusive comments on your Blog.
You can Enable the Manual Approval of Comment by going to Settings > Discussion and check to mark the Comment must be a manually approved option. So, whenever someone will comment on any of your blog post that comment will be helpful for manual approval and then you manage that in Comments sections from your dashboard.
7. Update your Ping-list :
Updating your ping-list will also improve all the steps in SEO, Crawling, Indexing, Ranking, etc… Update your ping list for faster Indexing of your Blog Post in Search results. Whenever you’ll publish a post, WordPress will automatically send a request to the Ping-listed websites (Hey! I’ve just published an Article, I want you to Crawl and Index it).
Get ping-list here and you’ll find a list of Ping addresses, copy and paste them by going to Settings > Writing. I’ll be sharing a Complete list of Ping websites, tomorrow.
8. Delete Unused Plugins and Themes :
Deleting Unused Plugins and Themes will always speed up your Blog or Website. So, I recommend you to delete the unused plugins and themes by going to :
Plugins: Plugins > Installed Plugins, select the plugins that are not in use or deactivated by you and Move them to Trash.
Themes: Appearance > Themes, and click on the themes one by one which you’re not using and click on delete button at the bottom of opened Pop-up.
You can also delete the unused Plugins and Themes from your WordPress root directory > Content > Plugins/Themes or be using FTP.
9. Install Recommended Plugins :
Plugins extend the functionality of WordPress or any CMS. There are many free and paid plugins available in the WordPress repository (Free/Subscription) and the Internet.
